Depression
Depression is a mental illness characterized by a persistent gloomy mood, lack of zest for life and negative feelings and thoughts. It may be accompanied by physical symptoms and recurrent thoughts of death. Depression goes far beyond a temporary gloomy mood and can last for months or even years.
Symptoms
Symptoms of depression vary, but may include the following:
- Emotional: Overwhelming feelings of sadness, emptiness, hopelessness or worthlessness.
- Physical: Fatigue, sleep disturbances (both insomnia and excessive sleeping), changes in appetite (weight loss or gain), and physical pain with no apparent cause.
- Behavior: Loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy, difficulty concentrating, indecisiveness, and social withdrawal.
- Cognitive: Negative thoughts, such as recurring thoughts of death or thoughts of suicide.
Causes
Depression can be caused by several factors, including:
- Biological: Changes in brain chemistry, hormonal imbalances and genetic predisposition.
- Psychological: Traumatic events, prolonged stress and personality traits such as low self-esteem.
- Environmental factors: Social isolation, loss of a loved one, work-related problems or financial concerns.
