About this study project

Narcolepsy and hypersomnia are chronic neurological sleep-wake disorders characterised by dysregulation of the sleep-wake cycle, which can significantly impair daily functioning and quality of life. This study investigates a potential pharmacological treatment for adults diagnosed with narcolepsy or hypersomnia.

These conditions are associated with the following clinical manifestations:

  • Persistent excessive daytime sleepiness and severe fatigue
  • Sudden involuntary sleep episodes during waking hours
  • Cognitive impairment, including difficulties with concentration and memory
  • Disrupted nocturnal sleep architecture and impaired daytime vigilance

Study objective:

This ANIMA Research study evaluates an investigational medicinal product in patients diagnosed with narcolepsy (type 1 and/or 2) or idiopathic hypersomnia, compared to a placebo control group. The therapeutic approach targets the underlying pathophysiological mechanism of the disorder, rather than solely addressing symptomatic management.

Criteria
  • Men and women
  • Age: 18–70 years
  • Diagnosis of Narcolepsy Type 1 and/or Type 2*
  • Diagnosis of Idiopathic Hypersomnia*

*Diagnosis can also be established at our centre.

How to participate
  1. Register via the online form; you will receive a confirmation e-mail
  2. Our team will contact you for further follow-up and to assess whether participation is clinically appropriate
  3. Begin participation under medical supervision, including a treatment period and follow-up visits

You will receive personalised guidance from our team of physicians and researchers throughout the study. You are encouraged to ask questions at any stage and will receive support at every step to ensure you feel informed and clinically well-supported.

Why your participation matters

By participating, you contribute to the clinical understanding of how individuals with excessive daytime sleepiness respond to a potential therapeutic intervention. The data collected will support the further development of this treatment and may generate valuable evidence for future clinical care.

Approved by the Ethics Committee UZA/UAntwerpen (reference 2026-8484, project ID 8370)
