Research into possible treatments for individuals living with active rheumatic disease

Illustratie ANIMA Research

About this study project

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory condition primarily affecting the synovial joints, with significant implications for physical function and quality of life. This study investigates a potential pharmacological treatment for adults with confirmed active rheumatoid arthritis, conducted in collaboration with Reumacentrum Genk, under the clinical leadership of Dr. Philip Remans.

Rheumatoid arthritis is characterised by persistent synovial inflammation, resulting in progressive joint destruction and functional impairment.

Clinical manifestations include:

  • Painful, swollen, and stiff synovial joints
  • Persistent fatigue and reduced physical endurance
  • Functional limitations in activities of daily living

The pathophysiology involves dysregulation of the immune system, including autoimmune responses and genetic predisposition, further modulated by environmental risk factors such as tobacco use and chronic psychosocial stress.

Study objective:

This ANIMA Research clinical study evaluates potential therapeutic interventions for patients with rheumatoid arthritis presenting with inadequate response to prior treatment regimens. The study aims to:

  • Develop more efficacious pharmacological treatment options
  • Improve joint mobility and overall quality of life
  • Assess the safety and tolerability profile of investigational therapeutic agents
  • Men and women aged 18–75 years
  • Confirmed diagnosis of active rheumatoid arthritis
  • Inadequate response to prior therapeutic interventions
  1. Register via the online form; you will receive a confirmation e-mail
  2. Our team will contact you for further follow-up and to assess whether participation is clinically appropriate
  3. Begin participation under medical supervision, including a treatment period and follow-up visits

You will receive personalised guidance from our team of physicians and researchers throughout the study. You are encouraged to ask questions at any stage and will receive support at every step to ensure you feel informed and clinically well-supported.

By participating, you contribute to the clinical understanding of how adults diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis respond to a potential therapeutic intervention. The data collected will support the further development of this treatment and may generate valuable evidence for future clinical care.
