"I was always a worrier, but that only got worse."
DEPRESSION - FROM THE HEART

Stefan (61) is a single father who faced depression five years ago, triggered by a change at work. He candidly shares his struggles: feeling unable to talk to others and reluctantly going to work every day. With this testimony about his journey to recovery, he hopes to inspire others who also struggle with this mental illness.
When did you first notice that you were suffering from depression?
The problems started at work about five years ago. I had to change jobs to a position that I was totally out of touch with, and the promised training was not forthcoming. So I had to go to work every day against my will. On top of that, I felt like I had no one to turn to. I was always a worrier, but that only got worse.
What did you find the most difficult aspect of depression?
The most difficult aspect of depression for me was that I couldn't talk to anyone about it. Although I did tell my daughters and they showed understanding, at the time they did not understand how serious it really was. Moreover, I am not a talker by nature and prefer to keep my feelings to myself. This made me feel very lonely.

"The follow-up with the psychiatrist and the daily walks with my dog were important steps in my recovery process."
When did you decide to seek help and how was your recovery process?
One day things got so bad at work that I collapsed and went home. I even tried to end my life then, after which I was hospitalized and came under the supervision of a psychiatrist. The help in the hospital and medication helped me recover, although the brooding remained.
Following up with the psychiatrist and walking my dog daily were important steps in my recovery process. It is important for people with depression to seek professional help because professionals really listen to you, can prescribe the right medication, and give you space to tell your story.
How do you look to the future after your experiences with depression?
As long as I don't end up in a situation like that at work again, I feel good, although the brooding is still present, but less severe. My message to others struggling with depression is to never wait until it's too late. Seek professional help right away if those around you don't understand how serious it is. Addressing the problem sooner can help reduce the stigma surrounding depression, even though it is often difficult.
